The Power of Feedback

The Power of Feedback: 360 Degree Reviews Why They Matter and How to Make Them Work

In this blog post, we look at how providing employees with multifaceted feedback plays a powerful role in supporting them to become aware of their impact, strengths, and areas for development.

Competent and motivated people are an essential part of your company’s success.  Ensuring they receive feedback from the right people at the right time, gives them the confidence to take ownership of their behaviours and performance.

360 Degree Feedback is a process where employees receive feedback from their managers, peers, and direct reports. Employees also complete a self-evaluation as part of the 360 feedback process.

When used as a development tool 360 Degree Feedback boosts self-awareness, uncovering hidden strengths and blind spots to identify development opportunities. Giving them the feedback from their managers peers, and direct reports allows them to gain an insight into how others perceive them and gives them an opportunity to both adjust behaviours and develop skills that will enable them to excel at their jobs.

How does 360 degree feedback work?

Participants receive feedback on a comprehensive list of leadership and management competencies, usually from their manager, peers, and direct reports. After the 360 evaluation is complete, participants receive a feedback report with an assessment of their strengths and weaknesses.

Who should receive 360 Degree Feedback?

360 Feedback is most commonly used to get feedback on managers and leaders in an organisation.   When used as a development tool, 360 degree feedback offers a number of benefits, including increased self-awareness, identification of potential problem areas and gaps in perception (blind spots, disagreements, hidden strengths and weaknesses), professional development, and increased communication and openness among employees.

Why is self awareness important for leaders?

Self-awareness is a critical trait for successful leaders.  A 360 review is a tool that will help you gain self-awareness, discover your own strengths and weaknesses, find out what others think about you, and more.  And when you know where your strengths and weaknesses lie, it’s easier to capitalize on them or improve upon them. In addition, it allows you to be honest with yourself in terms of how people perceive you as a leader. And that honesty can help guide your future decisions as well as make you a better manager.
