Smart, Local & Real: Rethinking How You Recruit in 2025

How do you attract the right people when recruiting and stand out from the crowd? Here’s what’s working in 2025

Recruiting the right person for your team has always taken a bit of thought - but in today’s market, it’s not just about posting an ad and crossing your fingers. Jobseekers are looking for more than just a paycheque. So how do you attract the right people and stand out from the crowd?

Here’s our no-fluff take on what’s working (and what’s not) when it comes to smart, practical recruitment in 2025.

Sell the Story - Not Just the Role

It’s not all about money anymore. People want purpose, balance, and a bit of heart. If your job ad is still a dry list of duties and KPIs, it’s time for an upgrade.

Upsell the benefits:

  • Do you offer flexible start times, RDOs, or the chance to work from home now and then?
  • Is your team a genuinely supportive bunch that backs each other?
  • Do you shout the coffees on Fridays or knock off early once a month?
  • Do you encourage learning, have staff social events, or give birthdays off?

These are the things jobseekers care about. Be specific. Paint the picture. Make your ad human.

Get Creative with Where You Advertise

Seek and Indeed are still solid tools, but they’re not your only options — and they shouldn’t be your only strategy.

Here are some underrated places that really work:

  • Local school newsletters: Schools are often keen for advertisers and you’ll tap straight into the heart of the community — parents, carers, and locals who want to work close to home.  Ring the office at your local school and see if it is an option for you.  Or have a chat to these guys: https://www.schoolzine.com/advertising/
  • "Jobs in [Your Town]" Facebook groups: Just about every region has one - Jobs in Port Douglas, Jobs on the Sunshine Coast, Jobs in Mareeba. They're free, active and often filled with quality candidates looking for their next gig.
  • Chat to local sporting teams: Think outside the square - for example, the Sunshine Coast Thunder Netball team and the Port Douglas Crocs AFL club are full of talented people looking for job opportunities that support their training schedule. A quick call to the team manager could land you someone with the drive and commitment you’re after.

Don't Just Post and Hope - Call Seek First

Before you upload your ad, pick up the phone and speak with Seek directly. They can advise you on layout, wording, job category and even when to go live - and you’ll often get better reach just by taking the time to have a quick chat. It’s a simple move that too many people skip.

Use Your Own Network (and Don’t Be Shy About It)

It might sound old school, but it works. Share the job on your own LinkedIn, in your local business group WhatsApp chat, at school pick-up, or at your local BNI. People hire people and a personal recommendation still carries a lot of weight.

Wrapping Up

Good recruitment takes a little creativity and a bit of legwork - but the payoff is a team that fits and stays. If you’re still just posting on one job board and hoping for the best, it’s time to rethink your strategy.

And if you ever want help writing an ad that really lands, or need support figuring out what to pay, how to structure contracts or where to look - you know where we are.
